My name is Alex Renwick. I am a student at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. My goal is to obtain a Bachelor degree in Accounting. I am also a member of the Panther Varsity swim team. I grew up in St. Marys, Pennsylvania. I have four siblings that I enjoy spending time with. The theme of my portfolio is the economical impact of making healthy choices. I analyze and argue about healthy choices and the impact on health insurance costs. I discuss the positive effects of wellness programs in the workplace and extracurricular sports in schools. Each essay includes comments on costs and benefits. I was facinated by the statistics published that support my own belief in the benefits of healthy living.
My first paper analized Counterpoint: Obesity Should Not be Covered by Insurance. In this essay, I evaluated and found major weaknesses in the article. While the topic itself had merit, the authors were unable to validate their argument. My second paper, Employee Wellness Programs Work, was an argumentative essay. I supported the belief that employers and businesses should offer wellness programs to their employees. The third addition to my portfolio was Extra-Curricular Sports In Schools Need Support. This argumentative essay disputed the controversary of schools cutting sports and/or extra-curricular activities from their budget. This should not occur as sports create the opportunity for many positive outcomes in students.
The underlying message throughout my theses is that if we as a society concern ourselves with the physical well-being of each other we will all benefit. I wanted to illustrate this point, so in addition to my essays, I added a video to provide background information of wellness programs in the workplace. It corresponded well with my topic and was a proper fit. I also added pictures and a chart to incorporate a visual aspect into my portfolio. The pictures are relevant to each topic making it easier to understand. With this portfolio, it is my goal to inform and convince the reader to support these and other wellness programs.
